RYA Competent Crew (CC)

“All certificates are issued via C-Masters.”
The RYA Competent Crew course is a 5-day hands-on introduction that transforms beginners into active, skilled crew members. Living aboard a cruising yacht, you’ll master the fundamentals of steering, sail handling, and essential ropework under expert guidance. This practical course prioritizes safety and seamanship, ensuring you can confidently assist a skipper in all aspects of daily sailing. It is the perfect foundation for anyone looking to transition from passenger to a useful, knowledgeable participant on the water.

Duration: 5 days (during weekdays or a weekend)
Location: Nieuwpoort (Belgium) or Kortgene (Zeeland, the Netherlands)
Students: typically 3, exceptional 4
Assumed knowledge: Students should prepare by reading the Competent Crew Practical Skills Handbook. The RYA Essential Navigation theory course is a useful addition. (online or classroom)
Previous experience: None required, however having completed the RYA Start Yachting course is a plus.

Learn by doing – From your first day on board, you take part in real sailing under the guidance of your instructor.
Build confidence at the helm, step by step – Learn to steer the yacht on all points of sail, handle sails, tack, gybe, reef, and control the boat safely under both sail and engine.
Feel safe at sea – Understand essential safety routines, man-overboard procedures, and how safety equipment is used on board.
Get to know the basics – Discover nautical terms, simple navigation, weather awareness, and the rules that keep everyone safe.
Become a useful crew member – Finish the course ready to assist on board and enjoy relaxed, confident cruising.
