RYA Day Skipper shorebased theory course

Certificate when successfully passing the exam.
The RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Theory course is a theoretical course covering the essential knowledge every skipper needs. You’ll learn navigation, tides, weather, passage planning and safety through clear, practical explanations. It forms the theoretical basis for the Day Skipper practical course. A solid foundation for safe and confident coastal sailing.

Seamanship basics – fundamental boat handling principles and good practice at sea
Navigation & pilotage – coastal navigation essentials, chart work (paper & electronic), position fixing and course plotting
Weather & tides – understanding forecasts, basic meteorology and tidal planning
Rules & regulations – collision regulations and safe conduct in busy waters
Safety & the vessel – boat construction and equipment, emergency procedures, distress calls and use of safety gear
